Powder Metal Materials & Custom Alloys
Bronze, Iron & Engineered Material Solutions
Proform manufactures powder metal components using bronze, iron-based materials, and custom alloy solutions engineered around the requirements of each application. Material selection plays a critical role in component strength, wear resistance, friction, lubrication, temperature performance, and overall service life.
Our engineering and metallurgy resources can help customers evaluate application requirements and identify the appropriate material for both standard and custom powder metal components. From self-lubricating bronze bearings and bushings to structural iron components and application-specific alloys, Proform combines material expertise with high-volume powder metal manufacturing.
POWDER METAL BRONZE
Powder metal bronze components offer an ideal combination of strength, wear resistance, and self-lubricating performance for demanding applications. Manufactured using powder metallurgy, bronze parts provide excellent dimensional accuracy, consistent quality, and cost-effective production for both simple and complex geometries. Their naturally porous structure can be impregnated with lubricants, making them well-suited for bearings, bushings, spacers, gears, filters, and other components that require reliable, maintenance-free operation. Powder metal bronze parts are widely used across industries including automotive, industrial equipment, agriculture, power generation, and fluid handling, where durability and long service life are essential.
Powder metal bronze is particularly well suited for bearing applications because its controlled porosity allows lubricant to be stored within the component. Proform manufactures oil-impregnated bronze sleeve bearings, flange bearings, bushings, thrust washers, spacers, and custom bronze components for applications requiring dependable, low-friction performance.
POWDER METAL IRON
Powder metal iron components deliver exceptional strength, durability, and cost efficiency for high-volume applications requiring precise, repeatable performance. Produced through the powder metallurgy process, iron parts offer excellent dimensional control, minimal material waste, and the ability to create complex geometries with little or no secondary machining. Powder metal iron is ideal for structural components, gears, sprockets, pulleys, and other wear-resistant parts used in automotive, industrial, lawn and garden, agriculture, and power generation equipment. With a wide range of alloying options and heat treatment capabilities, powder metal iron components can be engineered to meet demanding mechanical property and performance requirements while reducing overall manufacturing costs.
For components currently produced through machining, casting, or other metal-forming processes, iron powder metal may also provide an opportunity to reduce material waste and machining time at higher production volumes. By forming complex features near net shape, powder metallurgy can reduce the amount of material and secondary processing required to produce the finished component.

Choosing the right alloy is critical to achieving the performance, durability, and cost targets of your component. Proform’s experienced metallurgists work closely with customers to evaluate application requirements and recommend the optimal material composition.
MIXED MATERIAL
Mixed-material powder metal components combine the unique advantages of bronze and iron in a single part, delivering optimized performance where different material properties are required within the same component. By selectively incorporating bronze for low-friction, self-lubricating characteristics and iron for high strength and structural support, manufacturers can achieve improved wear resistance, durability, and overall part performance without the need for complex assemblies. This innovative powder metallurgy approach helps reduce manufacturing costs, simplify production, and extend component life in demanding automotive, industrial, power generation, and specialty applications.
SOFT MAGNETIC COMPOSITES
Soft Magnetic Composite (SMC) components are enabling the next generation of electrification technologies by delivering efficient magnetic performance, design flexibility, and improved energy efficiency. Manufactured from insulated iron powder, SMC materials minimize eddy current losses while allowing magnetic flux to flow in three dimensions, making them ideal for complex electromagnetic designs that are difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional laminated steel. SMC components are well-suited for electric motors, generators, inductors, actuators, and other high-performance magnetic applications used in electric vehicles, e-mobility, renewable energy, industrial automation, and power generation. By leveraging powder metallurgy, manufacturers can produce near-net-shape SMC components that reduce assembly complexity, improve performance, and support the growing demand for compact, lightweight, and energy-efficient electrification solutions.
Custom Alloys
Not every application can be addressed with a standard powder metal material. When specific mechanical, wear, friction, magnetic, thermal, or other performance characteristics are required, Proform can work with customers to evaluate custom alloy and material solutions.
Working with the broader metallurgy and engineering resources of MPP, material composition can be evaluated alongside component geometry, density, sintering conditions, secondary processing, lubrication, and the operating environment. This allows the material and manufacturing process to be considered together rather than treating material selection as a standalone decision.
Whether modifying an existing powder metal component or developing an entirely new part, our team can help identify a material solution designed around the application’s performance and production requirements.
