SELF-LUBRICATING BEARINGS & BUSHINGS
Self-Lubricating, Oil-Impregnated Bronze Sleeve Bearings
Proform Powder Metal: Bronze Sleeve Bearings
Proform manufactures precision bronze sleeve bearings for OEMs, industrial distributors, and equipment manufacturers across a wide range of applications. Designed to provide reliable, low-friction performance with minimal maintenance, our powder metal sleeve bearings combine the natural advantages of bronze with the self-lubricating properties of oil impregnation.
Our standard bronze sleeve bearings are manufactured using powder metallurgy and impregnated with SAE oil. The interconnected porosity created during the powder metal manufacturing process allows lubricant to be stored within the bearing itself, providing a continuous source of lubrication during operation.
Alternative materials and lubricants may also be available depending on part design, operating conditions, and application requirements.
Whether you need an existing standard size or a custom-engineered bearing for a high-volume application, Proform has the manufacturing capacity and engineering expertise to support your program.

What Is a Bronze Sleeve Bearing?
A bronze sleeve bearing is a cylindrical plain bearing designed to support a rotating or sliding shaft while reducing friction between moving surfaces.
Unlike rolling-element bearings, sleeve bearings contain no balls, rollers, or other moving components. Their simple design makes them compact, durable, economical, and well suited for high-volume applications. Powder metal bronze sleeve bearings offer an additional advantage: controlled porosity.
During manufacturing, bronze powder is compacted into the desired shape and sintered to create a strong, interconnected metal structure. Microscopic pores remain throughout the finished bearing and can be filled with lubricating oil. The result is a bearing that stores its own lubricant and can provide reliable performance without an external lubrication system.

How Oil-Impregnated Bronze Bearings Work
Oil-impregnated bronze bearings are designed to provide lubrication where it is needed during operation.
Lubricant stored within the porous structure of the bearing migrates toward the bearing surface as operating temperature and pressure increase. This creates a lubricating film between the shaft and bearing that helps reduce friction and wear.
When the equipment stops and the bearing cools, lubricant can be drawn back into the porous bronze structure.
This self-lubricating behavior makes oil-impregnated sleeve bearings particularly valuable in applications where routine lubrication would be inconvenient, expensive, or impractical.
- Self-lubricating operation
- Reduced maintenance requirements
- Low friction
- Excellent wear resistance
- Quiet operation
- Compact design
- Long service life
- Cost-effective high-volume production
Standard Bronze &
SAE Oil Impregnation
Bronze with SAE oil impregnation is Proform’s standard sleeve bearing configuration and provides dependable performance across a broad range of industrial and OEM applications.
Powder metal bronze offers an excellent combination of strength, wear resistance, dimensional stability, and lubricant retention.
SAE oil impregnation provides the lubrication required for many common operating conditions without the need for external grease fittings or routine lubrication.
For applications with unique performance requirements, alternative material and lubricant options may be available.
Material & Lubrication Options
Not every bearing operates under the same conditions.
Temperature, speed, load, shaft material, operating environment, and expected service life can all influence the appropriate bearing material and lubricant.
Depending on the part and application, Proform can evaluate alternative:
- Powder metal materials
- Bronze compositions
- Lubricants
- Oil viscosities
- Specialty impregnation options
Our engineering team can help determine whether the standard bronze and SAE oil configuration is appropriate or whether an alternative solution should be considered.
Bronze Sleeve Bearing
Sizes & Configurations
Proform manufactures bronze sleeve bearings in a wide range of inside diameters, outside diameters, lengths, and wall thicknesses.
Common configurations include:
- Inch sleeve bearings
- Metric sleeve bearings
- Standard catalog sizes
- Application-specific dimensions
- Custom bearing geometries
For high-volume applications, custom tooling can be developed to manufacture a sleeve bearing around specific dimensional and performance requirements.

Standard & Custom Sleeve Bearings
Proform supports both standard bearing requirements and custom OEM applications.
Standard Sleeve Bearings
Our standard product offering provides proven bearing sizes for common industrial and mechanical applications.
Standard components can be an efficient solution for distributors, maintenance operations, equipment manufacturers, and engineers designing around established bearing dimensions.
Custom Sleeve Bearings
When an existing bearing does not meet the requirements of an application, Proform can work with your engineering team to develop a custom solution.
Custom programs may address:
- Unique dimensions
- Application-specific geometry
- Material requirements
- Lubrication requirements
- Performance requirements
Bronze Bearings: Engineering Considerations
Selecting the right sleeve bearing requires more than matching an inside diameter, outside diameter, and length.
Important application considerations can include:
- Bearing load
- Shaft speed
- Load and speed relationship
- Operating temperature
- Shaft material and finish
- Bearing clearance
- Lubrication requirements
- Duty cycle
- Environmental exposure
- Expected service life
Providing this information early in the design process allows our engineering team to better evaluate the appropriate bearing solution for your application.
